Jacana Media is the leading independent publisher in South Africa. We are a private company based in Johannesburg and an office in Cape Town. The company employs 25 full-time members of staff and a range of part-time and freelance contributors. The company is well-established and financially sound with proper succession plans, and has achieved remarkable growth over a number of years.Jacana comprise of three divisions, Lifeskills, Library and school books and general books. Jacana LifeskillsThis division develops and publishes specialised materials in various fields. These include primary health care (with a special focus on HIV and AIDS), environmental education and eco-tourism publications, schools and community books, as well as interactive, curriculum-based materials for primary and secondary school sectors. Our area of expertise is to take a world of complex information, and to ‘translate’ it into tools for empowerment and behaviour change for various target audiences. The design and content of all our books and other printed materials ensure accessibility through user-friendly language and layout. Jacana has a long history of involvement in multimedia education strategies, one of which is the highly successful Soul City project, which we have been involved in since its launch in 1994. Soul City is a community outreach, health education and information project that reaches millions of people across southern Africa through various media. Jacana manages the production of related print materials in book format. We manage the production, print and distribution of up to 11 million copies of selected titles, in all 11 languages. Jacana is also the Print and Publishing Manager for the Department of Health’s HIV and AIDS Khomanani Campaign from its inception nearly 7 years ago. As such, the company manages the production and print and of all printed material for Khomanani. Jacana has also played a strategic advisory role across the campaign. A range of materials was produced covering HIV/AIDS, TB, STIs, Orphans and Vulnerable Children, VCT etc. More than 30 million publications of various kinds were produced for this campaign to date. Jacana has also partnered with David Patient (Someone who has lived a healthy life with HIV since 1983) and Neil Orr to publish Positive Health. This book takes a fresh look at healthy living for people who are infected and affected by HIV and AIDS. More than 70,000 copies have been sold in six months. Our work in HIV/AIDS education and behaviour change has given us unprecedented access to foremost experts in the field, and our work is recognised as being among the best available in this country.
